Much of the work of Ivan Tovar, from Cali, gives values to spaces and elements used by humans living in differing regions. That focus led him to visit a handmade brick maker in a town called Candelaria in the Valle del Cauca department. There, he noted that the process of conducting this activity demonstrates the interwoven relationship between fire and architecture. The experience became the start of the Project entitled Todos Los Fuegos, El Fuego (All The fires, The Fire) which includes the piece Untitled (Igloo), a structure constructed from a malformed blocks of clay and illuminated inside by a low voltage light bulb.

Despite a shape that conveys the ideas of protection and shelter, the work´s use of material created through industrial errors reveals the difficulties of constructive labour. With this object, Tovar make us examine our deliberate omission of transience and fragility in the places where we live, and remind us of the frustration we feel when we see and architectural structure collapse.

The form of the igloo can be interpreted as a key to an anthropological critique. As the critique Breyner Huertas remind us, through the construction of houses of ice that will disappear after being abandoned, the Eskimos thrive in regions that are highly dependent of climatic variation without altering their environment. By constructing a sculpture with materials that aspire to permanence but that are damaged, Tovar alludes to our obsession with acquiring territories in which to settle and, ultimately, devastate.
